Biography:Vic Chesnutt has long wanted to make an album employing dynamic instrumentation and production to flesh out his singular, storytelling songs. Teaming with accomplished producer Mark Howard and an all-star cast of musicians, Chesnutt beautifully realizes that dream on his eagerly awaited new CD, Silver Lake.Silver Lake was recorded in a large living room in the Paramour, an 80 year old hilltop mansion in the Los Angeles neighborhood after which the album is named. The process was unique – the band going at it full-tilt, playing and singing live, fixing everything on the spot and moving on, at a rate of roughly two songs a day. The album features Chesnutt on vocals, guitars, harmonica, casio and omnichord; Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams, Alejandro Escovedo) on guitar and vocals; Daryl Johnson (Neville Brothers, Emmylou Harris) on bass and vocals; Patrick Warren (Michael Penn, Tracy Chapman) on keyboards; Mike Stinson (Christina Aguilera) on drums and Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, Victoria Williams) assisting on drums and percussion. Mark Howard (production credits include Lucinda Williams and The Tragically Hip, engineering credits include Bob Dylan and U2) produced the album. The 11 songs on the album fall into 3 distinctive categories according to Chesnutt: short stories, poems and slogans. Inspirations range from a 5th century Chinese poem recited to Chesnutt by an old roommate in Shanghai to a story from the point of view of a eunuch. Rich with nylon string guitar and disarming honesty, Silver Lake is pure, signature Chesnutt. Top of Page Close this window |
