Richard & Linda Thompson :: Theatre Royal, London, UK, 1977

“Some songs deserve to fall off the radar,” wrote Richard Thompson curtly in response to a question on his website about a handful of “lost” tunes he and his then-wife Linda Thompson debuted back in 1977. The songs in question: “The Madness of Love,” “King of Love,” “Bird In God’s Garden,” “Rescue Me,” and “The Fire In The Garden.” Fortunately, we’ve got this bootleg tape of Richard and Linda playing in London with a short-lived ensemble. Richard and Linda had been off the radar for at least a year, having retreated to a Sufi commune in 1975. This UK tour was meant to be their grand return, but Richard must’ve had second thoughts, ditching the aforementioned lost tunes and not returning to the stage until more than a year later.

New West's Songwriters Talk About SXSW Now And Then

Veteran musicians John Hiatt, Richard Thompson, Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale and newcomer Max Gomez performed at New West Records' South By Southwest party Thursday.

Max Gomez had a mind-blowing moment at South By Southwest.

The up-and-coming singer-songwriter took an outdoor stage that had already been warmed-up by Richard Thompson, John Hiatt, Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale.

"I can say I had them open for me," he laughed. "That will never happen again."

In truth, the New West Records showcase Thursday afternoon at Threadgill's, had no clear pecking order, but the label clearly has high hopes for Gomez. His River Phoenix-John Mayeresque good looks and weathered-beyond-its-years voice surely warrant their interest.

Rolling Stone reviews The Replacements new EP 'Songs For Slim'

Welcome back, boys. The Replacements, Minnesota's beloved punk-rock hellions, have reunited with a five-song benefit EP for guitarist Slim Dunlap, recently paralyzed by a stroke. It's the group's first new recording in 23 years; not only are the Replacements doing it for the right reason, they're doing it the right way, with sloppily heartfelt covers of two Dunlap songs, a show tune from Gypsy and a Nico oldie from her pre-Warhol days. But the real smoker comes as the 'Mats rip into Hank Williams' "Lost Highway" – when Paul Westerberg testifies about a life of sin, you can hear all those lost miles of wear and tear in his mannish-boy howl. - Rob Sheffield

Patty Griffin Explores Family Ties On American Kid

Patty Griffin will release her seventh studio album, American Kid, on May 7. Recorded in Memphis and co-produced with singer-songwriter/Lisa Germano guitarist Craig Ross, it’s her first album for the label New West Records.

Griffin says her followup to 2010′s Downtown Church was written largely to honor her late father — a high school science teacher and World War II vet who lost his parents early in his life. Mr. Griffin, who lived for a time in a Trappist monastery, raised Patty and her six siblings, and, on one memorable birthday, gave her the life-altering gift of The Beatles’  Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band.
