Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale Mix Styles And Fun At Lincoln Hall

Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale made proficiency look easy Wednesday at a crowded Lincoln Hall. The Nashville outlaws and longtime friends staged a clinic in mixing country, R&B, rockabilly and other Americana-related styles on tunes notable for their simplicity and familiarity. In between songs, the duo exchanged comedic banter and stories, reinforcing a casual modesty that gave the 95-minute concert the laidback feeling of a private back-porch session.

In Nashville, The Buddy System

Buddy Miller is so low-profile that when he made a cameo appearance in a recent episode of "Nashville," it caused more head-scratching than toe-tapping. He remains a stranger to the best-selling music charts.

Yet he has lived and made music in the town that the show pays homage to for years. And his imprint in country and roots music—as an artist, songwriter, guitarist, band leader and producer—is growing all the time, even as he recovered from an onstage heart attack and turned 60 years old.

Lately, he's been supervising recordings by the stars of the ABC TV show, and is the producer of the hit "The Music of Nashville" soundtrack album, working with longtime friend T Bone Burnett.

Max Gomez Takes On the World With Debut Album

Max Gomez’s Rule the World backs heart and hope with the youthful idealism found in the album’s title track. High watermarks such as “Cherry Red Wine” show a sharp songwriter rapidly emerging. CMT Edge spoke to the New Mexico-born singer-songwriter about the compelling new collection, his musical influences and upcoming appearances at South by Southwest in Austin.

“I played South by Southwest last year for the first time, and I was pretty fresh, pretty new at playing in front of bigger crowds and lots of other bands,” Gomez says. “Since then, I’ve gone out on a few tours and have been learning and getting better. I’m looking forward to coming back this year and showing off the new skills I’ve got and winning over some new fans. “

Acoustic or Electric, Sounds That Call for Jumping Up and Down Tom Morello, the Nightwatchman, at the Allen Room

There is a direct line of descent from Woody Guthrie through Bruce Springsteen to Tom Morello, the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, whose alter ego, the Nightwatchman, is a militant left-wing acoustic folkie.

While watching Mr. Morello’s Nightwatchman concert on Saturday evening at the Allen Room as part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series, I fantasized how it might have been received were the year 1968, envisioning a fired-up audience pouring out onto the streets around Columbus Circle, ready for battle.

Still 'Electric' After All These Years

Recorded at Buddy Miller's house in Nashville, Tenn., Richard Thompson's "Electric" (New West), out this week, finds Mr. Thompson front and center in a sparse setting, his guitar the only solo melodic instrument. That's cause for joy: Mr. Thompson, 63, is a superior guitarist who always plays with a clear tone and exquisite taste, and provides no small amount of head-snapping surprises—features present in abundance on "Electric."

During a recent phone conversation, Mr. Thompson, who was in Miami and about to leave to perform on a cruise ship as it toured the British Virgin Islands, said he chose Mr. Miller to produce for the sound he captures in his home studio. Mr. Miller recorded the session on tape rather than digitally, allowing a warmth to shine through. Nothing is cluttered, nor does anything compete with Mr. Thompson, whose voice hasn't lost a bit of its quality. "Electric" features Michael Jerome on drums, Taras Prodaniuk on bass, Mr. Miller on an unobtrusive rhythm guitar, and Stuart Duncan—who drops in on occasion—on fiddle.
