CMT Edge Live Performance: The Outsider

The guys in Ben Miller Band are accustomed to being outsiders. In fact, they prefer it. Listening to the opening track on their brand new album, Any Way, Shape or Form, these are the first words you hear: “Lord, won’t you keep me an outsider here/These insider men, they don’t go anywhere.”

Miller says he considers “The Outsider” to be the band’s flagship song.

“It sort of sums up how we’re feeling right at this time of our career,” he explains. “I think everybody can relate to being an outsider because no matter where you are, you’re an outsider somewhere. When we play the song live, it’s a stomping song. It’s right in our wheelhouse.”

Miller wrote all 13 songs on Any Way, Shape or Form, the band’s first release on New West Records. Along with the persistence and determination in the lyrics, Miller’s relentless banjo gives the anthem that extra fire.

“Yeah, it’s a barnburner. It gets people moving,” adds Doug Dicharry, the band’s nimble multi-instrumentalist who handles everything from drums to electric spoons. Meanwhile, Scott Leeper rounds out the trio on washtub bass and vocal.

The hardworking band hails from Joplin, Missouri, and just wrapped a European tour with ZZ Top. Their U.S. tour dates resume Thursday (Aug. 7) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. They’re also confirmed for a September showcase at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville.
