Rodney Crowell, 'Tarpaper Sky'
The guys in Ben Miller Band are accustomed to being outsiders. In fact, they prefer it. Listening to the opening track on their brand new album, Any Way, Shape or Form, these are the first words you hear: “Lord, won’t you keep me an outsider here/These insider men, they don’t go anywhere.”
Miller says he considers “The Outsider” to be the band’s flagship song.
Ben Miller seems the ideal candidate to be tagged as an all American boy. Boasting rugged good looks and an actual heartland pedigree, this Joplin, Missouri, resident would seem perfectly poised to helm a group of fiddle frenzied, banjo-plucking Americana auteurs. With only one previous independent album to their credit, they can still be classified as newcomers — relatively speaking anyway — but their affinity for bluegrass and mountain music is all too evident.
Nikki Lane, one of Rolling Stone's 10 New Artists You Need to Know, made her late-night television debut last night, appearing on TBS's Conan. The performance, all danger and attitude, reflected Lane's rebel image — one opposite the mainstream-country stars who perform tonight on ABC's CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock.
Today's World Cafe: Next artist is Seth Kaufmann, better known by the name Floating Action. From his tiny studio in Black Mountain, N.C., Kaufmann created his latest album,Body Questions, which comes out at the end of the month. To promote the record, Floating Action will tour with a live band (pictured above) in tow.
John Hiatt‘s Terms of My Surrender showcases the legendary songwriter in peak form. The longtime Nashville resident’s new collection deftly doubles down on deep-browed blues (the title track) with typically sharp storytelling (“Wind Don’t Have to Hurry”).
Everything simply works, and Hiatt says the record took shape naturally.
