![]() Exploration |
The musical richness and psychological depth of their initial collaboration, the fittingly titled Exploration, is irrefutable proof that the disarming granddaughter of Woody/daughter of Arlo and the prodigious South Carolinian quite naturally bring out the best in each other. Johnny Irion conjures Gram Parsons or Harvest-era Neil Young; Sarah Lee Guthrie has the soulful, graceful presence of her legendary folk forefathers, and together they make music that sounds both fresh and nostalgic, invigorated with a genuine affection for tradition and for one another. |

![]() The Greatest White Liar |
Artists like Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent inspired a slew of seminal English rockers in the '60s. Young Nic Armstrong of Nottingham claims this lineage as influential, as the songs on his debut reflect. "Broken Mouth Blues" hints at "All Over Now"-era Stones with touches of Rubber Soul-era Beatles. Through all the familiar '60s Brit-pop influences, though, Armstrong's unique and powerful voice projects unbridled sass and vibrancy. Displaying a terrific sense of melody, it feels as if at any moment he might break out with frantic urgency - and that he does at times, with true English eccentric fashion. |

![]() Ghetto Bells |
Ghetto Bells, his 12th album to date, finds Vic Chesnutt paired with a unique group of musicians to create his most textural and moodiest work yet. Van Dyke Parks plays piano, accordion and organ throughout, as well as arranging strings for the dramatic and lush opener, "Virginia". Guitarist Bill Frisell adds an otherworldly element to this collection of humidity drenched dream scenes. LA session bassist Dominic Genova (Beck, Alanis Morrisette, Tori Amos) handles the upright, while Vic's good woman, Tina Chesnutt, takes care of the electric bass. Rounding out the group is the return of drummer Don Huffington, and Liz Durrett, who provides warm, ethereal backing vocals. |

| “I like the way those Marvin Gaye and Staples records were sort of gospel records,” Buddy says, “and sort of about the state of the world.” Like its 1960’s models, Universal United House of Prayer stands on the considerable strength of its music, and addresses what good music always addresses — the human predicament, and what the heart senses to be true. |

| On Age Of Miracles, Chuck Prophet spins the dial yet again, emerging with 11 self-penned or co-written slabs of rock ‘n’ roll wonder that allow soul, rock, pop, funk, blues and hip-hop to intermingle, remarkably, without shedding their distinct bite or identity. |

![]() The Dirty South |
If Decoration Day was about the choices people make and living with the results and ramifications, the songs on The Dirty South are about people who now believe they have no choice and how this leads some of them to turn to a life of crime to provide for their families. "...the boldest 'n' baddest Southern band in the land" - Rolling Stone |
